The first stone of the town hall was laid in 1428. In the 16th and 18th centuries, major renovations took place. Between 1875 and 1880, a new neo-Gothic town hall was built. After the destruction of World War I 1914-1918, the architects turned back to architectural elements drawn from the regional Flemish Renaissance style. In the front facade, wall anchors form the year 1923 twice. The new belfry tower rose in the courtyard, as a typical Flemish and medieval symbol of urban freedom.
