This brick windmill is a whopper of its kind: 25 m high to the ridge and therefore the highest mill in Belgium. There are no less than 7 attics. The mill was built in 1870 and has been protected since 1944. Against the outer walls is a lower beam that dates from the oil mill used on the ground floor. In 1914 the mill was operated under the supervision of the German military. During the liberation in 1918, the mill remained practically unharmed, which was highly exceptional, especially since 13 other mills were destroyed during the period. Strangely enough, it was the Germans who classified this mill in 1944. After the war, the mill was used exclusively as a grain mill until 1949. In 1997, the deteriorating mill was leased by the municipality of Kortemark, with the intention of thoroughly restoring it.
The mill houses the 'Groot-Kortemarke' mill museum, where you can find detailed explanations about the existing and disappeared mills from Kortemark. And of course, the whole process 'from grain to flour' is explained in great detail.
