In recent years, the eighteenth century abbot's building of the former St. Peter's Abbey in Oudenburg has been thoroughly restored and expanded. The renovated abbot's building houses a museum with visitor center and a cultural center with multipurpose room and cafeteria. The complex reopened on May 30, 2009.
The museum keeps a unique collection of objects from Roman times that were excavated in Oudenburg in recent years. They show the importance of Oudenburg as a Roman castellum on the Flemish coastal plain. These objects also illustrate how Roman soldiers lived here, what they ate and how they dressed. Among the most beautiful artefacts are a series of glass ash trees and bowls, more than thirty bronze cloak pins and a collection of bowls in 'terra sigilata', all of which were given as grave finds with the deceased soldier. Some graves of women and children were also found.
On the ground floor, a modern visitor center was set up where particular attention is paid to the city of Oudenburg in the Middle Ages. Especially the patron saint of Oudenburg, Sint-Arnoldus, and the Sint-Pietersabdij are discussed. You will also find more information about the tourist attractions of the Bruges Ommeland.
The newly landscaped abbey garden offers an oasis of peace in the middle of the city. On the other hand, it is a unique park for children with a lot of (educational) game elements. You will also find a 'green reconstruction' of the medieval St. Peter's Abbey and the Roman castellum. At the information desk and the shop of the RAM you will find all kinds of information about Oudenburg and its rich history. The reception staff will be happy to help you on your way.
