On the banks of the River Scheldt, on the border between West Flanders, East Flanders and Hainaut, you can find the West Flemish Scheldemeersen: flowery meadows, reed lands and shelterbelts along cut-off bends of the River Scheldt.
The marshes originated during the straightening of the River Scheldt. The best-known and perhaps most beautiful cut-off arm of the River Scheldt is Coupure Marcel Deweer, but each and every one of them are of high environmental value and are home to a rich variety of fauna and flora. Some of the marshes have footpaths while others can only be seen from the tow path.
