Mill of Kerrebrouck

On March 24, 1848, Jacobus Janssens-Muys, a cartwright in Jabbeke, received permission from the Permanent Deputation of West Flanders to erect a stake mill on tar.
To achieve better wind catchment, Alfons Van Kerrebroeck received permission from the Permanent Deputation on May 17, 1901, to place the mill housing on a tower. It became a fairly tall tower with a gallery.
In 1911, the lower building was raised higher, resulting in a stone smock mill. The cap, marked "18AR92," was purchased from the mayor of Gistel and miller Alfred Ronse. Older elements were also incorporated into the brick mill, as evidenced by the date 1768 on the claw pointer.

The mill had five floors and was also equipped with an oil press. The Van Kerrebroeck mill would increasingly rely less on wind power. From 1933, the mill could be powered by a gas engine from a freestanding wooden building. In 1939, the first sail was removed, and in 1948, alongside the second sail, the entire cap was taken down. From then on, the mill was only powered by a gas engine, which was replaced by a diesel engine in 1961. Meanwhile, the mill was protected as a monument in 1944.

Now only the narrow stone body remains. On the ground floor, there is still a mechanical mill with one pair of stones sourced from another mill. Of the two pairs of stones on the stone floor (second floor), one is still on-site; the other is outside.

Although the immediate surroundings are marred by a large commercial establishment across the street, the body serves as a defining element at the edge of the village center.

The municipality of Jabbeke entered into a leasehold agreement with the private owners in 2007, aiming for a mill-capable restoration. A draft competition for a study agreement to create a design was also approved (municipal council of November 12, 2007).
