Jacob van Maerlant was born in the vicinity of Bruges and likely attended the famous Sint Donaas chapter school there. As a result, he had learned excellent French and Latin. He was well-versed in the most important books in those languages. Around 1260, he became a sexton in the village of Maerlant, near Den Briel. During the approximately eight years that Jacob lived on the island of Voorne, he wrote seven works. He did this for various high nobles, who probably provided him with the time and resources to write. Without such support, a writer in the thirteenth century could not survive. Ultimately, you could not live off the sale of your books, and literary prizes did not yet exist.
For a time, he served the Lords of Rode, who were then involved in the Oosthof.
