Domain Krekemeersen

In the past, our municipality has repeatedly faced issues with water drainage and storage, leading to flooding in the village center of Kortemark. Therefore, the Provincial Government, in collaboration with the municipality, has planned a retention basin at the confluence of the Grijsperrebeek, the Kasteelbeek, and the Spanjaardbeek. The area around the retention basin has been designed with a multifunctional character, combining water management, nature, and recreation. The priority is to lower the water level during heavy rain. However, the water level should not fall too low (aquatic life must remain possible). The retention basin is filled with relatively clean water from the Kasteelbeek and is maintained at a reasonable level during the spring and summer. The rest of the area has been arranged as naturally as possible. Space has been made for quiet recreation: walking paths, benches, observation hides, etc. In addition to the retention basin, there are also plans to construct a dry basin.
