The headquarters of the Belgian Army was located in the town hall during the crucial Battle of the IJzer. Kind Albert I also had his command post in the building. Among his visitors were King George V, the French president Poincaré, the Generals French and Foch. In October 1914 the possible flooding of the IJzer plain was also discussed here with Karel Cogge.
In the new visitors centre, touchscreens and photo walls guide you through your exploration of the city. Want to know more, the Tourist Information Office is situated next door.
