On the Kemmelberg, a 16-meter high column has stood since 1932 as a memorial to the French soldiers who fell during the Battle of Kemmel in World War I. This column symbolizes the Roman goddess Victoria, the goddess of victory, with wide-open wings and a laurel wreath in each hand. In popular language, this statue is sometimes referred to as The Angel.
