Considered one of the most remarkable trees in Europe, the dimensions of the Old Oak (Quercus robur) at Liernu are amazing: it has a ground level circumference of 14.24 m and a height (in 1992) of 18m.
Its age is unknown, but experts believe it to be at least 700 years old.
From the late 12th century, Liernu was a fortified village with entrance gates, towers and ditches.
In the 13th century, its feudal lord, the count of Namur, offered a charter of autonomy to just one part of the village to encourage inhabitants to return and settle within the walls.
Perhaps this was when the Liernu oak, beneath which the mayor and magistrates used to sit to dispense justice, was planted.
