Mollendaalbos is the eastern part of the Meerdaalwoud and is largely located in the territory of Bierbeek. The Meerdaalwoud, with its 1800 ha, is one of the largest forests in Flanders and, together with the Zoniënwoud, used to be part of the expansive Kolenwoud, which covered much of central Belgium between the 11th and 13th centuries. Subsequently, large parts of the forest were cleared, as evidenced by the numerous villages in our region that have names ending in “-rode” (Haasrode, St-Agatha-Rode, St-Pieters-Rode,...). The Meerdaalwoud was long owned by the lords of Bierbeek and later passed to the counts of de Croy and van Arenberg. Since 1929, it has been the property of the Belgian state.
