In the chapel of Saint Rochus you see some peculiar images that may require some explanation.
The angel you see in the picture heals the leg of Saint Rochus that has been affected by the plague. The story or legend is as follows: Rochus was born in Montpellier. He gave his inherited wealth to the poor and left for Rome on foot in 1317. On the way, he nursed the sick, preferably plague sufferers, and soon made a name for himself, because he healed some by making the sign of the cross over them.
On the return journey he was infected by the plague himself in Piacenza. He is therefore often depicted with an open leg. He retired to a forest and was healed there by an angel . On his return to Montpellier , he was taken prisoner as a spy by order of his uncle. He spent five years in prison until his death. When he died, an angel appeared in shining light and proclaimed that all who invoked Roch against the plague would be healed .
