Noorderwijk is a village in the Belgian province of Antwerp and a part of the municipality of Herentals. It lies to the southwest of Olen, with which it has merged. Noorderwijk was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. Old names include Northreuuic and Noerderwyck. In a document dated January 21, 974, Emperor Otto II returns possessions in "Northreuuic" to the monks of Saint Bavo's Abbey in Ghent. In 1241, a man named Egidius, knight of Noorderwyck, is mentioned. In the 13th and possibly in the 14th century, Noorderwijk belonged to the land of Geel. In 1583, the village was destroyed by the Spanish army during the siege of Westerlo. The plague ravaged the area in 1624, 1634, and 1667. From 1370 to 1881, the lordship was never sold but always transferred through inheritance.
