Since 1977, Opoeteren is a part of the municipality of Maaseik, in the Belgian province of Limburg. Just like Neeroeteren, Opoeteren owes its name to one of the streams that flows through both boroughs, namely the Oeter - which is officially called Bosbeek - on the Kempen Plateau. Opoeteren consists of several hamlets and residential areas, of which the Village and Dorne are the most important. Dorne even forms a separate parish.
