Vlimmeren is a village in the Belgian province of Antwerp and a part of the municipality of Beerse. Vlimmeren was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. Old names of the place, such as Flemere, date back to the Salian Franks, as evidenced by its triangular village square. According to Godefridus Wendelinus, Vlimmeren is a very old village. This learned canon wrote a book in 1649 titled *Leges Salicae Illustratae*, printed by Plantijn-Moretus in Antwerp. Wendelinus interprets and explains the Salian laws in this work, of which the oldest known texts date back to the time of Clovis. In chapters 11 and 28 of these legal texts, names such as Malb. Ismala and Malb. Exmala are mentioned for localization. According to Wendelinus, 'malb.' is the abbreviation for maalberg or the place where justice was administered, meaning Ismala-East Malle and Exmala-West Malle. The book also contains a map of the northern part of the realm of the Salian Franks, on which the author places Flemere between Turnhout, Herentals, Grobbendonk, East and West Malle. Thus, Vlimmeren existed already during the time of the Franks if Wendelinus's interpretation is correct. In the second half of the 14th century, it was given, along with Turnhout and the surrounding villages, as "Land of Turnhout" to Maria of Brabant. Even later, this area mostly remained a Brabant possession; the region maintained a separate administration and financial policy until the end of the ancien régime.
