Sint-Martens-Lennik, like Sint-Kwintens-Lennik, is said to have originated from a Roman settlement, with the difference that Sint-Martens-Lennik originated as a free settlement of farmers and craftsmen. It became a Frankish settlement in the second half of the first millennium. The dedication of the parish church to Saint Martin, a central figure of early medieval Christianization, reinforces this hypothesis.
