Hamme is a district of the Belgian municipality of Merchtem in the province of Flemish Brabant. Besides a few agricultural businesses, the municipality is residential; trading middle-class is completely absent. Hamme was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. The toponym is said to be derived from the word Ham. A Ham is a promontory in a floodplain of rivers that is always reclaimed from the water. The village was first mentioned in 694 in the Liber traditionum Sancti Petri Blandini of Ghent.
