Helkijn is a small village in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a part of the municipality of Spiere-Helkijn. It was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. Helkijn is located along the Scheldt River, near the border with Wallonia. Helkijn was first mentioned in 847 as Helcinio. This is indeed a copy from around 1300. Helkijn was mentioned again in 988 and 1156.
