Wolvertem

Wolvertem is part of the province of Flemish Brabant and is located in the northwestern part of the Green Belt around Brussels. This municipality is situated on the border of the Brabant clay plateau and the more northern sandy plain, thus making it part of the touristically remarkable area known as the 'Brabant couters'. A couter is a term from the Gallic-Roman period or from the early Middle Ages. It refers to an area where intensive arable farming is practiced. Even today, the agricultural and horticultural businesses in this green lung north of Brussels are certainly not to be underestimated. Wolvertem, as the cantonal capital, lies in a valley between the Maalbeek in Grimbergen and the Grote Molenbeek in Merchtem. The village developed around the small Molenbeek that flows from south to north towards the Rupel and the Scheldt. The village center developed at the intersection of two main roads: Vilvoorde - Aalst and Asse - Mechelen. Later, many smaller residential areas emerged, gradually growing into neighborhoods with their own names and their own parish church. One of these centers is Imde, the most central hamlet that is part of a much larger estate. The landscape is characterized by fields, meadows, tall rows of poplars, and smaller deciduous forests.
