Sint-Martens-Bodegem dates back to at least the 11th century. The oldest mentions are Bodenghem (1086, 1227) and Bodeghem in 1267. In the Middle Ages, Sint-Martens-Bodegem was divided into a fiefdom, held on loan from the Land of Dongelberg. The area had its own alderman's bank, meier and leenhof, and a cijnsheerlijkheid, which together with parts of Itterbeek and Dilbeek were held on loan from the lords of Gaasbeek. In 1284 this last part was under the jurisdiction of an alderman's bank that was also competent over Itterbeek and Strijtem. In 1698, the loans of the lords of Gaasbeek were elevated to the so-called county of Tirimont. In 1604 the church came under the patronage of the St. Rumbold's Chapter in Mechelen.
