Berneau

Berneau is a place in the Belgian province of Liège and a sub-municipality of Dalhem. Until January 1, 1977, it was an independent municipality. Berneau was founded on a rolling clay substrate. The landscape shows many similarities with that of the nearby Dutch South Limburg. The village is referred to in medieval sources as Berne and Bernauw. The counts of Dalhem owned a castle there. This later belonged to the prominent family Van Gulpen from Overmaas. The municipal court of Berneau also largely bordered the municipal courts of Dalhem, Moelingen, 's-Gravenvoeren, Weerst, and Bolbeek. However, Berneau was not part of Dalhem; it belonged to the eleven banks of Saint Servatius, a possession of the chapter of Saint Servatius in Maastricht. The Duke of Brabant held the high jurisdiction in the village.
