Elene is a village in the municipality of Zottegem, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Elene has about 1000 inhabitants and has long remained an agricultural village in the Flemish Ardennes. The name Elene comes from the pre-medieval alina and means "clear water", probably a reference to the Molenbeek that rises in the ponds of the castle of Leeuwergem. From the 12th century until the French period in Belgium, Elene was a seigneury under the lords of Leeuwergem and Elene, who had their residence in the castle of Leeuwergem.
