Bolbeek is a component municipality of the Belgian municipality of Dalhem in the province of Liège. Bolbeek lies in the west of the Land of Herve at an altitude of over 125 meters. The landscape is characterized by meadows and orchards. The village is referred to in medieval sources as Bubais and Bulsbeke. Bolbeek was a lordship with low jurisdiction. It was originally owned by the Munster Abbey in Aachen, but belonged to the Land of Dalhem, one of the Lands of Overmaas. The jurisdiction was somewhat divided between the Munster Abbey and the Duke of Brabant. The Duke of Brabant obtained these rights through the old Counts of Dalhem. On December 26, 1661, Bolbeek came to the States-General due to the Partage Treaty between the Republic and Spain. The treaty stipulated that the Republic would receive one 'partage' or share from each of the three Lands of Overmaas. As a result, they acquired the capital Dalhem, the villages of Bolbeek, Feneur, Trembleur, Olne, Oost, and Cadier in the land of Dalhem. On November 8, 1785, Austria and the States-General signed the Treaty of Fontainebleau, whereby Bolbeek was ceded by the States-General to Austria in exchange for parts of Austrian Valkenburg.
