Kumtich is a village in the municipality of Tienen, in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. In the north of the borough is the hamlet of Breisem. Kumtich was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977.De name Kumtich belongs to the group of settlement names formed with the Gallo-Roman suffix -acum. The first member of acum names is often a Roman personal name. For example, Kumtich can be explained from the older Comitiacum, with the meaning "belonging to Comitius". With the shift from k to ch, the name can be compared to Küntzig in Luxembourg.
