Hillegem is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a part of the municipality of Herzele. The town has about 3500 inhabitants and is located in the Dender region, on the Molenbeek.
The name of Hillegem is first found in the yearbooks of the Ghent St. Peter's Abbey between the years 811 and 870 as Hildenagahem, with indication that this place was located in the pagus Bracbantensis, "Juxta fluviola Borsitbace" or Borsbeke. In 1108, 1145 and 1201 hillengem was written; in 1164 and 1198 Hillengen; in 1186 Hillenghem; in 1205 Hillegem and in a charter of 1218 terra Hillini. In view of this last spelling, it is not difficult to explain the name of this village: Hille, Hillen or Hillo is an old Germanic personal name, so Hillegem is simply the residence of the Hillen.
