Hillegem is today a typical commuter town. The busy provincial road through the center and the Brussels-Kortrijk railway speak volumes in this regard. Nonetheless, the village boasts a rich history. This is evident, for example, in the numerous footpaths and church paths that find their way from Hillegem through the rural surroundings. They date back to a time when one would search for their beloved no further than "an hour's walk." The large farms, now protected as monuments, have dominated life in the village for centuries. The monumental "Hof de Meierij," just past the church on Diepestraat, belonged to the Ghent Saint Peter's Abbey until the French Revolution. It is sometimes referred to as "the cradle of Hillegem." Still near the church, the protected rectory from 1750 on Ledebergstraat is definitely worth a detour. The facade of this elegant country house showcases a wide range of building materials, all painted in a typical soft color.
