Oplinter is a village in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant and a part of the municipality of Tienen. Oplinter was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. According to the common explanation, Linter is a composition of lind + ter, meaning "lime tree." This explanation is untenable. In place names with Lind/Lint, which Gysseling indicates in his Toponymic Dictionary, it always refers to a location "by a lime tree or a lime tree grove." This place could be: fertile silted land like in Lindau, a small grove on high sandy soil like in Lindelo, a wild plain like in Lindveld, a farmstead like in Lindweiler, etc. However, "lime tree" does not appear anywhere as a place name. Therefore, we should connect Linter more with Lintaruurde, an unknown place in Friesland, explained as "ford in the brook called Lintara." Lintara was the old name of the Genoveva brook. The prefix Op means upwards, to above. Thus, the village name Oplinter means "the upstream settlement by the Lintara." In this way, the water name became a village name.
