Schaffen is a district of the Belgian city of Diest. Schaffen was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization in 1977. The village is located at the transition between the Kempen and the Hageland. Schaffen is particularly known because the barracks and training center of the Belgian army for parachutists are located there, as well as a military airfield, constructed by the German army during World War I in 1916. This airfield is also used during the weekends by the civilian parachutists of Para Centrum Vlaanderen, Diest Aero Club for gliding, and by Diest Model Club for flying model airplanes. Annually, around August 15th, a "fly-and-drive-in" event is organized at this airfield. This event always attracts many interested parties. Visiting sport aircraft come from all over Europe, and the vintage cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, and covered wagons come from the larger region around Belgium.
