Itegem is a village in the Belgian province of Antwerp and a part of the municipality of Heist-op-den-Berg. The village is located on the Grote Nete. Itegem was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977.De first mention of the place dates back to 976. According to a charter of Emperor Otto II, the monastery of Sint-Baafs ceded its possessions of Noorderwijk and Itegem to the noble Folgbert and Reginswinde on 19 January 976 in exchange for the villa Holthem. The name Itegem comes from Idingehem. Until the French Revolution, a large part of the current territory of Itegem was located in a small enclave of the lordship of Mechelen. The rest belonged to the Duchy of Brabant.
