Zaffelare is a village in the municipality of Lochristi, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Zaffelare is located on the western edge of the Waasland region, just east of the Ghent port area.
Zaffelare was founded in the 12th and 13th centuries. The area was not inhabited before, but in these centuries forest was cleared and a village was founded, under the administration of Ghent's St. Peter's Abbey. Old names of the place were "Meentocht" and "Odeveld". This road is located on a kilometre-long sand ridge that formed the natural southern border of Zaffelare. The natural northern border is the Zuidlede. The reclamation of the area provided various natural products and raw materials: the cleared areas provided agricultural yields, the forests provided wood, and the area also produced peat and hay. In the event of a shortage of money, the abbey later raised income through sale or excisation.
