Karel Jonckheere was a Flemish poet, critic, and prose writer (Oostende 9.4.1906 - Rijmenam 14.12.1993). In the Netherlands, he gained wider recognition through the radio and television program "Hou je aan je woord," which he worked on together with Godfried Bomans, Harry Mulisch, and Hella Haasse.
Jonckheere's work has been awarded multiple times. In 1943, he received the Lode Baekelmans Prize for the travel story "Cargo" (1940). For his poetry collection "Spiegel der zee" (1946), he was awarded the Triennial State Prize for Flemish Poetry in 1947, a prize he received again in 1956 for "Van zee tot schelp."
