Brown beer has made Oudenaarde a famous beer city. On the other side of the Scheldt you can see the buildings of the famous Liefmans brewery. In 1770 the first 'brown' was tapped there. Today, it is still brewed according to a 300-year-old recipe. The cherry beer only started foaming here much later. The brewing installation, with boiling kettles, refrigerated vessels and baudelot coolers, are still made of red copper.
Today, Liefmans is part of the Duvel Moortgat Group.
