Chapel of Atonement 'Need seeks Comfort'

Spermaliestraat nr. +270. "PENALTY CHAPEL IN NEED SEEKS COMFORT" cf. sign on nameplate. Located in street curve. Rebuilt in line with the 19th-century tradition cf. among other things, a façade stone with the inscription "DEVASTATED IN 1914 REBUILT IN 1924 BY HERE. LELIEUR. PASTOR L. DERRE CONSTRUCTION". A single-nave building of two bays and a choir of one bay with a three-sided closure under slates (green + yellow glazed ridge) gable roof. Whitwashed brick construction above a rough plinth. Profiling cornice, (corner) buttresses with cuts. Gabled façade with a crowning cross; blind oculus in the top of the façade with cross and painted inscription: "NEED SEEKS COMFORT". Pointed arched openings including a door under a drip ledge with extended ends. Tiled interior. Pointed barrel vault. Statue of Mary on a pedestal between two flowered pedestals in pointed arch niches. Façade stone with inscription: "HOLY HOSTS STOLEN FROM THE CHURCH OF SLYPE WERE FOUND HERE AGAIN ON JANUARY 9, 1908".
