Little Bamberg

Description

In the 16th century, the Great Bamburg was divided into two farms. Next to the Great Bamburg on Bamburg Street (see also fiche 17), a Small Bamburg was now built. The Small Bamburg was constructed on the plot where at least since the twelfth century, the Lords of Westende had their residence. It is unclear whether buildings were reused or demolished at that time.
The current building and its surroundings are now protected as a monument and as a village view. Architect Theo Raison designed the reconstruction of this traditional farm during the interwar period. Typical regional features are the red bricks and red roof tiles, but also the characteristic buttresses of the barn and coach house wing.
The farm is accessible via a paved driveway that leads to a well-maintained, arched entrance gate. Behind it, the farm buildings are arranged in a horseshoe shape. The striking longitudinal barn (i.e., the threshing floor runs in the length direction of the building) is inspired by thirteenth-century tithe barns, such as those in Lissewege (Ter Doest).
