't Brugs Beertje refers to the legend of the so-called "oldest resident" of Bruges, a large "white" bear that made the area around Bruges unsafe in the Middle Ages and was killed by Baldwin I (the founder of the County of Flanders). Since then, the bear has been the city symbol of Bruges.
On the facade of this cozy beer café, there is a statue of an upright bear with a shield, similar to the statue in the Poortersloge at the Jan van Eyck Square. The café 't Brugs Beertje is one of the oldest beer cafés in Belgium, specializing in Belgian specialty beers of "great taste." You can choose from about 300 beers and 5 changing draft beers, some of which are unique one-time brews. The interior is decorated with all kinds of beer memorabilia and radiates a very cozy brown pub atmosphere. There is also a small shop where you can buy various beer souvenirs (T-shirts, posters, etc...) and a few Bruges beer guides. A plush bear and a comic about the history of the one and only Bruges Bear are also available as mementos of the best beer café in Bruges.
(This beer café is also very popular among foreigners, and it is often quite full.)
