The church of Sint-Laurentius dates back to the golden age of Ename, around the year 1000, and still serves as a place of prayer.
It was not until 1990, when stabilization work was carried out on the church, that this building revealed all its secrets. Frescoes have appeared behind the organ. A study has established that these Byzantine-influenced murals are among the oldest frescoes in the Benelux. It has since been learned that from an architectural point of view, the church corresponds very much to the early Christian buildings of Ravenna, the home port of the Emperors Otto in Italy.
