The Burreken is a recognized nature reserve in the Flemish Ardennes in East Flanders. The reserve is located on the territory of the municipalities of Brakel, Maarkedal and Horebeke. The very relief-rich area is located on the border of the Zwalm basin and the Maarkebeek basin. It belongs to the foothills of the west-east facing ridge that extends into the Flemish Ardennes. In 1981, the then non-profit organisation Natuurreservaten bought the first plot of land. The Burreken nature reserve now covers 35 ha and is managed by Natuurpunt. In 2021, the area received a subsidy from the province of East Flanders to expand. The nature reserve is recognised as a European Natura 2000 area and is part of the Flemish Ecological Network.
