How dire the situation was in Flanders during the crisis years 1845-1850 due to poor harvests and cholera is fantastically illustrated by Maarten Van Ginderachter in his excellent book Poor Flanders:
"In Nederbrakel, a real influx of people occurred in February 1847 when a dog owner killed his loyal four-legged friend, skinned it, and offered the carcass for sale. It is said that 300 people flocked to the rumor that cheap meat was available."
