Until the first half of the 20th century, farmers used the wide ditches in the Sint-Onolfspolder to move their animals and yields. Notably, the walnut trees along the dike have been planted there for centuries for their nuts and wood. For the implementation of the Sigma Plan, the walnut trees were on the dike. Now they need to be planted at the foot of the dike. Some parcels in the Sint-Onolfspolder have been recognized as nature reserves.
