Distillery Van Hoorebeke

Remaining part of the former Van Hoorebeke gin distillery, the only Belgian gin distillery based on juniper berries. Part of the former steam distillery, previously located behind the now disappeared house of the Van Hoorebeke family in Boelare. The Van Hoorebeke distillery was moved from Lembeke to Eeklo in 1772, first on the east side of Boelare, and relocated to its current location in 1779. In the second half of the 19th century, the distillery was run by brothers Felix and Henri Van Hoorebeke. In 1867, extensive renovations were carried out and a new steam distillery was established. After Felix's death, his brother Edmond, a brewer and mayor of Ledeberg, joined the business. He purchased the gin distillery and the houses in Boelare in 1879. The company was further expanded and modernized. The mansion on the street was also replaced by a new house in 1896. His son George continued the business until 1949, after which the sale followed. The gin was further distilled by the Nv Fourcroy from Brussels, and now by distillery Filliers from Bachte-Maria-Leerne. The brewer's house on the street was demolished and the remaining part of the old distillery was converted into a gin museum.
