This castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century and later came into the possession of Jan de Luu, the then mayor of Aalst. According to Boon, the Luu was pro-Orange and wanted to see the Roman city of Aalst fall into the hands of the Beggars. In 1580, the Beggars occupied the Water Castle. Boon describes the important role that the castle played in the Beggars' War: from here the Beggars tried to invade Aalst in November 1581. The plan failed, because the troops that were supposed to follow them had come too close and were spotted by the Aalst sentinels.
