The Wellemeersen are one of the last floodplain areas in the Dender Valley. The river formed a wide alluvial plain here. When the Dender was still a brook and not regulated by locks, it flooded the surrounding plains. In the Wellemeersen, we find reed beds, sedge fields, alder-elm forests, buttercup meadows, and marsh spireas. Interesting vegetation can be found in the flooded sand extraction pits.
