On July 2, 1889, a tragedy occurred in the presbytery of Denderleeuw: bishop Lambrecht, who had only been appointed a year earlier, died unexpectedly of heart failure at the age of 41. The beloved bishop had just visited Denderleeuw and had addressed a packed crowd of people just hours before his death. The news hit like a bomb and was discussed extensively in the newspapers. Boon also mentions the sudden death in Pieter Daens, mainly because the loss of this popular figure was a heavy blow for the Daensists: Lambrecht had already expressed his support for the actions of the Daens brothers before his appointment as bishop.
