The Normandwijk was in the early 1930s (see photo) a new, clearly tourism-oriented subdivision, among others promoted by then-top architect Vereecke, which was intended to be an extension of the sea dike district. The Norman architectural style was taken as an example to build a neighborhood with detached villas in greenery. It is actually a later application of the garden city idea that had already been implemented earlier in Westende-Bad. At the time, it was also a clear reaction against the more urbanized character of the buildings on the sea dike.
