During the Devonian, more specifically the Frasnian, fossil-rich limestone reefs were formed here. You are sitting on the former southern edge of the Old Red Continent. Jasper Verhaegen compares the situation back then with the current Great Barrier Reef in Australia or the reefs in the Caribbean. The youngest reefs formed during the late Frasnian have a characteristic red color and, due to their biological composition, many internal structures. These limestones, commonly referred to as 'red marble,' were mined on a large scale in the region around Philippeville.
These decorative stones were used in Versailles and in the city hall of Antwerp.
