Tijdens het Devoon, meer specifiek het Frasniaan werden hier fossielerijke Kalksteenriffen. Je zit hier op de toenmalige zuidrand van het Oude Rode Continent. Jasper Verhaegen vergelijkt de situatie van toen met het huidige Great Barrier Reef in Australië of de riffen in de Caraïben. De jongste riffen die tijdens het late Frasniaan gevormd werden, hebben een typerende rode kleur en door de biologische opbouw heel wat interne structuren. Deze kalkstenen, in de volksmond 'rode marmer', hieuw men in het verleden op grote schaal uit in de streek rond Philippeville.
Deze sierstenen werden gebruikt in Versailles en in het stadhuis van Antwerpen.
