Houtain-Saint-Siméon was an important center of the straw hat industry (manufacture de chapeaux de paille) and straw braiding (tressage) until the mid-20th century. The straw hat produced here, especially the so-called canotier, was world-famous and was sung about by Maurice Chevalier.
