CERIA (Centre d'Enseignement et de Recherches des Industries Alimentaires et Chimiques - Centre for Education and Research for Food and Chemical Industries) is the second largest campus in the Brussels-Capital Region. The entire site covers 20 hectares and was built between 1950 and 1954. The buildings that make up the campus are scattered in a park, reminiscent of the school complexes of the 1930s. Some famous Brussels architects were involved in its design: Antoine Courtens (Palais de la Folle Chanson in Brussels) and Michel Polak (Villa Empain). The somewhat austere style of the building and its clear lines are in keeping with the Art Deco movement. The surrounding land, which is currently under construction, will be home to a project that is the result of a collaboration between the housing authority of the Brussels-Capital Region and the organisation Foyer Anderlechtois. The project, called ‘CityCampus’, it is intended to combine light industrial activities with housing. Now let’s take a small detour to the nearby 14th-century Elishout farmhouse, which is in stark contrast with the architecture of CERIA. What a unique sight!
