Climb up for a fantastic view.
From here you can look as far as Maastricht and over the various church villages. In clear weather, the view extends to the terrils of Wallonia. You are standing on the Kempisch plateau. The transition from the Meuse valley to the Kempens Plateau is very steep and forms a staircase of an average of 45 meters. This steep edge runs from Opoeteren (Maaseik) in the north to Gellik (Lanaken) in the south. This continuous line in the landscape of more than 20 kilometers long is one of the most spectacular geological phenomena in flat Flanders. This steep edge is situated in the Hoge Kempen National Park.
In the bushes along the path you can see the saddle locust in August. His short neck shield resembles a saddle. This green grasshopper with a short abdomen is rare and can only be found in a few places in Flanders. Like here in the Hoge Kempen. The ranger keeps an extra eye on the rare saddle locust.
To the right of the path is red heath. This is another typical species for the Hoge Kempen.
