Since April 26, 2005, 14 hectares of the Hellegat and Kotje Piepersbos have been recognized as a forest reserve. The starting point is the spontaneous, undisturbed development of the forest biotope. Corsican pines, larches, sweet chestnuts, and American oaks are cut down for the benefit of native hardwoods.
The expansion of the domain's forest made it possible to align the recreational offerings with the ecological vulnerability of the Hellegat forest. Since 2012, the forest reserve has been expanded to 18 hectares.
