We come here to the first source level of the Hellegatbeek at about 90 meters TAW. We descend further into the forest to about 60 to 70 meters TAW. Wood anemone, cuckoo flower, marsh marigold, forest loosestrife, and slender primrose bring color to the forest. Not only do plants thrive here, but the forest is also teeming with wildlife. We are in the hunting area of the fringed bat. If you look closely, you might spot a nuthatch. Its name reveals its way of moving and is also derived from its special nesting behavior. It clings to the tree as if it were glued and it is the only European bird capable of descending the trunk head first and walking along the underside of horizontal branches.
